When did the average baseball fan start caring more about TV ratings then the actual game itself?
All I keep reading on here is how bad the ratings are going to be for the World Series between the Phillies and Rays. Does everyone on here work for FOX or something? When did how high the ratings are become more important then the teams that are actually playing? Enlighten me all you baseball experts on Y!A.

never heard anyone cared.
Baseball is baseball.
Anytime the bosox and yankees aren’t in it I’ll watch!
I love real teams, with real desire, to really play; The Game.
ratings? who cares?
Cause some people on here think that if the World Series doesn’t have big name teams(like Red Sox,Yankees,Cubs, ect)that its gonna be Boring and nobodys gonna watch.
but there idiots.
Douglas thats still buying into it, you should watch it just because you want to. to know whats going on and not be ignorant. im not an expert but i will still record the games if im not home to see them and hope for an exciting game. and for the record those ‘fans’ arent fans and im positive dont know what the sandberg game is or who people like mickey mantle, pete rose, ernie banks or nolan ryan are.
Every team is exciting if its in the world series
No One cares about the ratings. I even watched the little league world series. As long as there is a pitcher on the mound and a batter in the batter’s box I am happy. I am a die hard yankee fan but there is more to the game then just big teams. Baseball should be played for the passion and the love of the game.
I think a Phillies Rays world series is a good thing for baseball, it’s
something different
Because, if TV Executives do not get the Dream Matchup in the World Series – A POX will be placed upon their House !!
It’s Insane isn’t It ??
I don’t think a True Fan gives a Dang !!
My Team has not been in the Playoffs in 23 years, but I still Love to Watch, because I love Baseball !!
Even a 4-game Sweep scares the Heck outta them.
Trust Me !! Soon… the Negative Press about this Matchup, will disappear, as the TV Marketers dream-up some hook to make you think that this will be the Most Exciting Series, Ever !!
….and You Will Especially Enjoy Our Commercials !!
For the TV maybe MLB, itself — Baseball is no longer a Sport, as much as it is Entertainment Big Business
…and it is Sold as Such to the Public !!
They hope that someone who does not even care for Baseball, will be Brainwashed into thinking, My God !! How can I Miss this Once in a Lifetime Event ??
This applies to All Popular Sports IMO.
TV has to make everything LARGER THAN LIFE, instead of letting the Natural Beauty of the Sport, just BE
They want YOU to Affect the Sport, instead of allowing IT to Affect You.
I try to ignore it — In fact, when I watch a game, I turn-off the TV sound and listen to the Radio Guys — They are Much More Knowledgeable than the TV twerps IMO.
Am I making any sense or just ranting ?? Where’s my medicine…?
I have no idea, if I answered your Question, but I think the Other Answerers – DID
Here’s to you, Joe Dimaggio

Just about when the average basketball fan started buying into the bullcrap spewed by the Laker fans who tried to convince the world that the NBA Finals with San Antonio in it isn’t fun to watch after they got their asses handed to them by the Spurs in the playoffs.
lol theyre all people that aren’t phils/rays fans that are pissed because they won’t get a manny/torre v. sox series.
phils/rays fans couldn’t care less about how many people across the country watch
In post season, its all about money, and the ratings will determine whats paid to FOX and MLB; and traditionally, only big market teams make money (Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, White Sox)…
The Phillies and Rays are not big market household names, and therefore, will not generate much interest in the World Series.
The problem is it’s a talking point on ESPN talk shows like PTI and Around the Horn, not to mention the radio talk shows. Baseball – no matter who’s playing – doesn’t get ratings like football, though.
I don’t care. The ratings don’t mean a thing to me. As a real baseball fan, I’m really looking forward to seeing a team that’s never been in the World Series in the Rays versus a team that has a long history but only one championship in the Phillies. I think it’s great. I remember those really good early 90s Phillies teams…they were involved in one of the best World Series I’ve seen against Toronto. They just came out on the wrong end there.
I won’t be talking about ratings anymore. Let’s enjoy the series. I hope it goes seven games.
Because most of these people are primarily fans of a CITY (or a team), and not fans of the SPORT.
When it comes to baseball talk, I’ll primarily identify myself as a Red Sox fan. But really, I’m a baseball fan whose favorite team is the Red Sox. Just because my favorite team got outplayed during the league championships doesn’t make me like the sport of baseball any less. Of course I’ll be watching.
Here’s how I translate the all-too-common (on Y!A) statement no one wants to watch these two teams in the world series
translated as my team didn’t make it, I’m bitter, and I can’t imagine why anyone could possibly be interested in a team other than mine.
I don’t care about ratings (though I do approve of Fox getting poor ratings, as Fox deserves to suffer), and I don’t know when such things became a topic of public discussion. Probably some people in the newsroom decided, one slow day, to talk about how crappy the idiots over on the broadcast side were screwing up everything, and it just took off from there.
Notice, every Sunday or Monday, that movie sales get their own press release as well? Why? Who outside the business gives a damn? Do high revenues somehow validate the choices of the viewers who did go see that movie?
Yeah, really! I think some people on here, who are fans of other teams that get eliminated from the playoffs, only watch the playoffs if there’s some big name team in there. So instead of taking the time to think of an intelligent question, they just blurt that out thinking that nobody is or ever was a fan of those teams. Who cares about ratings, honestly? I know I could care less, and the smaller teams in there, the better for me! Let them have their moment in the spotlight.
And personally, this will be the BEST World Series I will have ever watched (: Go Phils!
Hey Nobody.
That is the best rant ever on YA.
Believe you me, I know.
Every time I rant or hurt someones tender feelings on YA, I get nailed by the YA Police.
I absolutely don’t care about the ratings, but it does to some people, people who aren’t real baseball fans.
Finally someone who agrees with me. I think it’s pathetic for people to call themselves true baseball fans and then say that. If you really are a baseball fan, you’d be just as excited as I am to see less known teams like the Rays and the Phillies (instead of teams like the Red Sox for example, who I’m sick of hearing of) in the world series.
Edit: Actually, you’d be excited about the World Series no matter who was in it!
Isn’t it ridiculous?? I extremely dislike that!!
All this talk is very annoying.. now i know that everyone have their right to express their opinions.. and i guess there are certain teams that sound more exciting to watch than others.. but you’re not gonna get THEE greatest match up in baseball history all the time and frankly speaking i don’t want that all the time. I want to and like to see different teams out there shining. I’m so excited for this WS match up!!
So what i’m trying to say is.. I am an avid baseball fan and i watch any game.. and any world series because ANY two teams can make any series nerve wracking
stupid media.. geez i mean don’t espn shows talk about how the ws is gonna affect the ratings blah blah blah all the time???? I’m glad that there are real passionate baseball fans left in this world
